A message from hostess Vanessa Mártir: I lost my querido hermano, Juan Carlos Moncada, this past summer, & have spent the past six months writing and raging and crying through my grief. 2013 was a year of loss for so many. We lost family and friends and lovers, people we thought we’d spend our lives with, we’d make memories with.

On January 23rd, I wish to celebrate their lives & the love they gifted us. I’ll be hosting and sharing stories about my brother, & even my little girl will be sharing something she wrote for her Tio Tio, her nickname for my brother, her uncle.

The event is a collaborative effort between La Loba Poetry & LatinosNYC. All proceeds will be donated to Conifer Park, the rehab center that helped my brother so many times but in the end couldn’t save him from his pain.

There’ll also be an open mic that follows the same theme. Hope to see you there.
