Dear Bullet Series

In light of the “Senseless” killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile and the other killings in Atlanta and LA, I decided to write a #dearbullet series against the use of guns in everyday life.

So far I have written

Sundresses, green auras & cool ties

So yesterday afternoon, after too many plans fell through, I finally decided to make an appearance at New Jersey Young Professionals’s Sundress and Tie networking event. Boy was I glad i went.
I met some awesome people. From comedic lawyers to late night loving rehab therapists to party animal furniture designers to English criquet playing ex-auditors to travel loving office managers to peruvian foodie hikers to ballroom dancing human resource managers to flirty reiki loving IT specialists and to creative teachers. When something that ends atÂ 6p doesn’t end for you till 8:30p, you know you met some people that you will be talking to and hanging with for a while.

As i mentioned reiki knowledgeable people…. the brother and sister duo told me about my bright green nails (via Reiki For Holistic Health) :

So I finally made it to Rochester after missing my first flight. After enjoying a weekend with the Ladies and my fraternity, it was time to get down to business. I was able to put some of my books in the bookstore by Global Village called Shop One! So all of my Rochester readers, please visit Shop One for your copy.

Afterward, I set up for my book signing and reading at Java Wallyâ€™s. I appreciate those that attended and enjoyed the company of my professor and magazine supervisor. The questions from the audience was great and thought provocking. I was overjoyed that I got to meet up with another SÃ.Nik artist, Carlos Valentin. It is always refreshing to talk to and fellowship with other aficionados of the written and spoken word. It was great to be back where everything began to get serious; I really nourished my love for the art of poetry within the walls of the College of Liberal Arts and the halls of Unity House and the Student Union. I enjoyed my time so much so that I am planning on a another trip in February for another book signing and am adding a performance to Unity Houseâ€™s â€œTribute.â€ I have so much memories from U-House… check out the Jackson 5!

AINY Art Festival

After my internship, i got wind of an art festival that the hospital does for it’s patients. I couldn’t wait to get in on that. So I helped set up the art show by gathering the art and cataloguing it. Finally I got to perform at the opening ceremonies today. I performed “Broken Angel” and the patients told me that they were touch by the performance. Music to my ears.

The patients also performed and touched me more than they realize. It is both a blessing and a curse that great art comes from struggle. But it is a great inspiration for all that can witness it.

PACE Eye Opener

This morning, I spoke at the Program for the Acceleration of Careers in Engineering (PACE). The presentation was “Channeling Negative Energy into Positive Outcomes”. I will post some of the slides on the website soon. I was able to telegraph how “My Journey through Poetry” came into being and the importance of an anti-bullying attitude. I also told the teenagers about how to channel the negativity that is often thrown at them into fuel and ammunition to be dreamers.

The presentation was a hit. So many questions, so much participation! I love to impact the lives of youth and help make their lights/dreams brighter!

PACE picnic

In this crazy heat, I decided to go to the PACE (Program for Acceleration of Careers in Engineering) Alumni Picnic. It was so much fun hanging out with the youth, the people that will join me in trying to make the world a better place and help shape people into better people. I reconnected with some of my friends and other artists. I am working on a project that I hope my friend, Patricia, can help me with.

I met a PACE Alumni from a few years before me. Brennan was very cool. I hope we can work together in the near future. I hope that my poetry can inspire him as well.
After eating some good food, spraying each other with water guns, playing taboo and running after my niece, I am so exhausted. I think I sweated out more weight than I drank in water….

Book Talk at Teachers College

I just finished my book talk at Teachers College and I really felt inspired by those who came out. Seeing that people do care about poetry in its pure form and appreciate simplicity is motivating. It was great that I could share my work with such an academic setting and have vulnerability in self expression and writing be accepted. I was asked some great questions and was even challenged by some. To think that hard beginnings, ageism, bullying, self esteem, love, career and motivation can all be covered in one hour is amazing. I read some poems that you see in the poetry section and gave a preview to my upcoming book, the more adult, “T.O. Love Azucar.” I even explored a bit of a connection between counseling and poetry.

Poetry is a wonderful outlet and I hope that my message of self love and self expression in spite of can continue to be carried to the ears that can benefit from it. If you weren’t able to attend, you sure missed out on an intimate but inspiring affair. Check by later for some pictures.
Next stop is a school near you!

Famous February

I noticed I didn’t post what I did this month in honor of Black History Month aka Famous February. So… I performed at Columbia’s Black Student Network’s Black History Gala celebrating Kujichagulia (self determination, a principle of Kwanzaa). Soon you will be able to see the performance in my spoken word section. Check back later for an update. I also performed the same poem at the black history program at my church in NJ.

I also was fortunate enough to attend a Multicultural Psychology conference last weekend. Very very inspiring. I hope as I continue to reflect on that experience I can bring you great art. I loved meeting Dr. Boyd-Franklin and Dr. Parham especially. They each had some inspiring words for new coming counselors and social justice leaders. More about this conference soon to come.

Just a quick update for you to know that I haven’t forgot about you!
