If you love JC slam please do not read this post! I’ve learned honesty is the best policy so here it goes…

I went to jersey city slam last night finally quelling my friend Lyte Epps. Hes been wanting me to hit that stage since forever… i got there… everyone standing around, place dark and i find out it they told everyone 9 but it doesn’t start til 10… strike 1

I came all the way from work in Brooklyn to spit…knowing that i would only get an hour / hour and half artist inspiration was saddening. But i met a dope poet that often frequents the Nuyorican, i was feeling a little better. I also met a person who frequents Louder Arts so i was thinking about taking away strike 1. But no, Be on time.. i understand an half hour grace period but an hour! C’mon..

But then the host came up… she was soooo long winded! Say the rules and get to steppin love! I do appreciate the dirty hiaku u spit before my set, that was dope… but strike 2 for you not wearing shoes… professionalism love professionalism…

I performed “how to make sugar” and a new piece, “patience”… so glad i didn’t do “lesson plan” (only 4 people would hv gotten it)..

On the open mike, there were some good deep poets that i thoroughly enjoyed. You could tell the artistry; i love that. Two outta four comedians were good… and then the poet laureate of Union City came up…Strike 3.. aweful!

Strike 4… inside jokes with the regulars… not including the new folks…

The slam… the sacrificial poet was timid… you couldn’t hear her… she had some dope lines but the piece needed work… i mean when u say sacrificial poet i am expected to be blown away ie Louder Arts & Nuyorican… plus i talked to her before it started & she said SHE WASN’T A POET! how you hv someone as a sacrificial poet who doesn’t even think she’s a poet?!?! Really JC! Really! STRIKES 5 AND 6!

Because it started an hour late, only got to hear 1 person in the slam…. Theron… he restored my faith in the slam… but when i saw his score against the sacrificial poet… i was done… not really gonna put a strike here bc the truth is… SOMETIMES THE AUDIENCE HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING?!…

the strike 7 goes to the time penalty…I don’t know how you deserve to have the harshest time penalty in all of slam..1 pt deduction every second if your poem exceeds 3min20s…

The moral of this story is… I hope u believe in you have a second chance to make a first impression bc JC slam… u really need that second chance!

Some sour Azúcar this morning!
Peace!

So i went to the nuyorican last night to support Latinos NYC… Advocate of Words and Rainmaker had me homesick.

Advocate of words blessed my heart reminding me of the enticing rhtymn and love beat of Salsa… making me wish i had my own salsero.

Rainmaker performed an awesome piece about his Grandmother… i could envision the sandy and clear Jamaican beaches as i enjoy my mangoes and my ginep. I miss savoring ocho rios and getting lost in the waterfalls and canopies of fern gully. I cherish the lessons o get from grandma and others no matter how strong their broken patois is..

Raul is Raul… doing his own thing and captivating the audience with his every movement, every syllable. I pray one day i can have that same command.

I love being around likeminded people who have big hearts… it helps remind me that i do belong in this sometimes cold world….

After much pressuring from Godsent, I finally was able to attend Verses Open Mic. I was filled with excitement before it started until after the warm up game. I having a great time playing with Godsent’s beautifully goregous nena, Joy, was expecting this excitement to continue throughout a God and Jesus focused open mic.
Although it was also a birthday party, it was still a heavenly filled night by those who performed. My favorite though was the StreetHipHop Ministry with Cypha IX… he really knew how to command a room and bless the stage. I was inspired to write more performable religious spoken word. Unfortunately, I dont think many people were there for the right reasons…

Don’t just stand and stare and don’t move… you knew where you were going so act like it. Worship and praise the lord through art and music… don’t act like a rock… be an audience..

It’s a late Saturday night and I am at the Nuyorican finally after going up to go down on the NYC trains because of construction and track work. Here I am thinking I am late when they haven’t even started. It started an hour after the listed event time… I run into a Columbia classmate, I find my friend who was meeting me there… it all seemed good…
I enjoyed some of the Hip Hop, not all… but I am picky so that is normal. I like old school message music type Hip Hop. I was digging Tang Sauce with his breaking and trumpet and his hip-hop; Jay Vegas with his therapeutic poetry (obviously… because of ); RapOet aka Self Suffice with his everything… his swag and his performance. I also liked the Red headed guy and the girl that hosts “Eargasms” but I don’t remember their names.. but after that things got a little impatient for me…

I like Hip Hop but I cannot stand when your songs don’t really have substance but what you talk about after your set is done is really deep and meaningful. Be 100% all the time… not 50% because you think it won’t be liked or make money… Come on People! That really pissed me off and soured the rest of the night until the open mic.

I don’t know if I’d be back because of my sentiment about being Real and the fact that it started so late.. But I will give them another shot.. I’ll check out the Wednesday show when my schedule frees up.. but no guarantee.

100% real, 100% of the time,

You add wine and pasta, you get interesting conversations and great food. The line up:

~ Pinot Grigio & Fettacini Alfredo
~ Merlot & Pasta bergonaise
~ White Zinfandel & some vegetable pasta (didn’t like it… blocked the name out… lol)
~ Port wine & fried dessert ravoli

I loved the first two pastas, hated the merlot ( like everyone at my table), and loved the White Zinfandel (its one the list of drinks i drink… i rarely deviate). I didn’t have the Port Wine because the gracious waiter did not give it to me because i was driving home… Thank God because it was raining animals once i got closer home and i couldn’t see! Anyway… the fried ravioli was like “I will work for food!” So i enjoyed the gelato on the side and the chocolate covered berries….

It was nice seeing Rachelle again and networking with people. But i am really surprised that people really need so much CP time to get an event full. I couldn’t believe it. An hour and 45 min late cushion! Come on people we have to be better than that! Especially for a classy event…

So yesterday afternoon, after too many plans fell through, I finally decided to make an appearance at New Jersey Young Professionals’s Sundress and Tie networking event. Boy was I glad i went.
I met some awesome people. From comedic lawyers to late night loving rehab therapists to party animal furniture designers to English criquet playing ex-auditors to travel loving office managers to peruvian foodie hikers to ballroom dancing human resource managers to flirty reiki loving IT specialists and to creative teachers. When something that ends at 6p doesn’t end for you till 8:30p, you know you met some people that you will be talking to and hanging with for a while.

As i mentioned reiki knowledgeable people…. the brother and sister duo told me about my bright green nails (via Reiki For Holistic Health) :

GREEN AURA COLOR MEANING: Relates to heart and lungs. It is a very comfortable, healthy color of nature. When seen in the aura this usually represents growth and balance, and most of all, something that leads to change. Love of people, animals, nature; teacher; social

Bright emerald green: A healer, also a love-centered person

Yellow-Green: Creative with heart, communicative

Simone Nikkole and Mocha (butter)Fly were out in full force networking… Sí.Nik Productions may have gained some clientele too! I can’t wait for Wednesday at Park 33 ; i just know if these people i met attend it will definitely be a serious Azúcar party!

Until Wednesday my lovely Dulces!
